It seemed like just yesterday, that Harry Potter had arrived at Hogwarts for his first year, and now he was leaving.
As she looked across the Great Hall on her last day at Hogwarts, her eyes captured the emerald gaze of Harry, the boy she loved dearly. The two of them looked at each other and each of them gently blew a kiss to the other. Seven years ago, it had been a different story. Back then they hated each other’s guts, and as Professor McGonagall continued to drone on about life outside the school she thought back to the first time Harry and her met.
It was a fine sunny day, and she’d just arrived at Kings Cross Station. She was just getting ready to go through the barrier onto platform 9 ¾ when her eleven year old self had spotted a lonely boy who’d looked about the same age as her. He appeared to be lost and she was just about to walk over to him to offer her help when she watched him approach a family and started talking to them. The girl stopped before she had taken half a step and turned back to see her parents disappear through the barrier. She quickly followed suit, for she knew her parents wouldn’t like to see her talking to or mixing with people who were considered to be blood traitors.
As she stepped onto the scarlet steam train, better known as the Hogwarts Express, she turned to her parents – who were giving her last minute instructions about who to consort with and who not to – when she spotted the raven haired boy as he appeared from the barrier. Quickly after him came the youngest male member of the family of supposed blood traitors. Who was this strange boy who’d grabbed her attention? She felt someone shake her arm and this action shook her out of her dreamy state. After a rebuke from her mother and father for not listening she got onto the train.
A few minutes later and at the sound of a loud whistle the train started to move slowly out of the station. After waving until her parents were out of sight the girl turned and started to move down the train carriages to look for a seat. She came to a compartment and after looking through the glass window, she spotted the same raven haired boy that she saw before. She placed her hand on the door handle and was just about to pull it when she noticed that he was sitting with the red haired boy that her parents had warned her about. She lowered her hand and, with one last glance towards the black haired boy, she continued to walk along the corridor with neither of the two boys noticing her actions. She walked on until she came to another compartment that contained a boy she knew Draco Malfoy and his two friends – who looked more like henchmen if their bulkiness was anything to go by –. She entered and, after the customary formalities, she settled down in a seat to let her mind wander back to the boy that she had already become so infatuated with.
The first memory that she had of even coming close to speaking with Harry was when they were all standing at the top of the stairs, waiting to be admitted to the Great Hall for the sorting ceremony, and Draco had approached Harry to offer his friendship, which I thought was nice of him to do, but Harry had snubbed him. Right as she was just about to rebuke Harry for the way he’d talked to her best friend, Professor McGonagall came back and they’d entered the hall. From that moment on she’d thought of Harry as being an arrogant prat and that one action had changed the way she’d thought of him. SHE STARTED TO HATE HIM.
It was about four years later that her attitude towards Harry began to change, she went out to Hogsmeade one Saturday with Draco and his two cronies and she’d decided to go for a walk by herself on the vast Hogwarts grounds after a while. She was starting to get fed up with Draco always shouting and putting her down when they were in company, and she wanted to clear her head. She knew her parents approved of her relationship with Draco, but she was beginning to think differently. She walked passed Hagrid’s house and continued to walk along the edge of the Forbidden Forest. So deep in thought was she that she didn’t notice the edge of the gorge and stumbled for a moment on the edge frantically swinging her arms, trying to recover her composure, but with no avail. She tumbled head over heels down the steep slope. When she’d reached the bottom she tried to stand up, but suddenly felt a sharp pain shoot through her body, and sank back down onto the ground. She was suddenly filled with worry and terror because nobody knew where she was. She did not tell anyone of her plans and night was starting to settle all around her. So she shouted out for help.
Quite a few hours must have before the girl suddenly jerked awake because it was pitch black. She couldn’t see her hand when she’d put it up in front of her face. Her throat was sore from all the shouting she had done earlier, and she was beginning to worry about ever being found: not many people venture out as far away from the castle as she had done. Having resigned herself to spending the night outdoors, she heard the sound of footsteps. Despite the pain, she sat upright and listened more intently to hear the footsteps come closer. The girl let out a hoarse shout, but the person didn’t seem to hear her. After a few more attempts the footsteps halted and after letting out one more croaked call, she heard whoever was making the footsteps call out ‘Lumos’ and a light appeared over the edge of the gorge.
She must have fallen unconscious again at that point, because the next thing she knew was how she woke up in the hospital wing. Lying on top of the bed next to hers was Harry, fast asleep. Looking around her she noticed that daylight was just dawning outside and the hospital wing was in partial light. She whispered Harry’s name, not wanting to disturb Madam Pomfrey, but he didn’t stir. She tried again but this time slightly louder, and this time Harry stirred and slowly got up. While stretching his arms, he looked towards the occupied bed and noticed that the occupant was awake. He got up from the bed and sat on the girl’s bed, facing her.
‘You gave a few people quite a scare’ Harry said. ‘There have been people looking for you for most of the night.’ He got up and made his way to the hospital wing door. But before he reached his destination:
‘Harry’ she called,
Harry hesitated and turned around. She hesitated at first, too, and then she spoke up.
‘I along with others have given you a hard time over the last four years.’ She hesitated for a few more moments before continuing ‘I’d like to apologise for the way I’ve behaved You’re an alright guy. I was just too stupid to notice it before; I allowed other peoples prejudices get in the way of what I should believe. Thank you for saving me.’
Harry walked back towards the bed and sat down on the edge again. Gently taking her hand in his. ‘Pansy I’ve admired you for the past year. But due to the type of people you hang around with, I was afraid to approach you and speak to you about my feelings. When I saw you at the bottom of the gorge with two broken legs, my heart almost leapt out of my mouth.’
At this Pansy burst out laughing. Harry looked taken aback for a few moments before she went on to explain.
‘I’ve liked you from the first moment I saw you at King’s Cross when we were starting first year.’
At this revelation, the two of them burst out laughing quite loudly, bringing them to the attention of Madam Pomfrey, who came out of her room and assessed the situation and immediately started shooing Harry out of the hospital wing. At the door, Harry turned around and quickly waved to Pansy who smiled back and returned the wave.
News quickly spread throughout the school that Harry and Pansy were an item. To say that it shocked some people was an understatement, and one person who was absolutely livid about it was Draco. And Harry knew that he’d hammered another nail in the coffin that he knew Draco wanted to bury him in, but Harry didn’t mind. He was happy.
Minnie had just finished her speech and the applause brought Pansy back to reality. The past three years with Harry had been wonderful. More people respected her now and didn’t give her a hard time like they’d done before. She Looked once more at Harry, who was now fighting his way to her through the throng of students. When he’d reached her, he grabbed her in a hug and lifted her off her feet, he planting a kiss gently on her lips and then gently placed her back on the floor. In that moment Harry pulled a small, emerald green box from his robes and said;
‘Pansy Parkinson, for the last three years I have loved you, and I don’t know where my life would have been without you. I want to be with you from now until the day I die, and I would like you to do me the honour of being my wife.’ With that, he opened the small box to reveal a stunning emerald and ruby engagement ring. Pansy was so thrilled, and as Harry placed the ring on her finger, she said one word:
‘YES!’
