The Karemma were a humanoid civilization native to the Gamma Quadrant planet Karemma and were members of the Dominion.
Physiology.
Physically, Karemma were tall and slender with black or dark brown hair that was combed back. They had a head ridge, like Klingons, but smoother and without edges. The head ridge went down and over the nose. The ridge could be slightly seen to the chin of a Karemma. As a result of this ridge, their noses looked very large. Karemma had normal eyes that were gray, black, or brown. The nose was quite large in the lower end. It was very broad and one line in the skin on each side of their noses pointed downwards to the outer sides of their face. Overall, this gave them a somewhat rodent-like appearance.
Culture.
Little is known of the culture of the Karemma, but they were apparently a mercantile, trade-oriented race. They loosely seem to have been the Gamma Quadrant analogue of the Ferengi, though in service to the Dominion. Just as the Vorta functioned within the Dominion hierarchy as administrators and bureaucrats, and the Jem'Hadar functioned as shock troops, the Karemma seem to have handled basic trade affairs within Dominion space. Unlike Ferengi, however, Karemma believed in fair dealing and cautious business practices, and regarded cheating or gambling to be taboo.
History.
The first relations between the Karemma and the Alpha Quadrant were established in 2370, by the Ferengi. As the Dosi were not able to meet Grand Nagus Zek's request for 100,000 vats of tulaberry wine, they referred his chief negotiator to the Karemma, allegedly being an important member of something called the "Dominion". (DS9: "Rules of Acquisition")
In 2371, Federation representatives aboard the USS Defiant came together with First Minister Ornithar of the Karemma in an attempt to contact the Founders of the Dominion. The meeting was arranged by Quark, who had previously negotiated the tulaberry wine trade. Ornithar admitted that the only contact the Karemma had with the Founders was through their representatives, the Vorta. He did direct the Defiant crew to Callinon VII, where they had been instructed to send all inquiries. (DS9: "The Search, Part I")
Later that year, a Karemma was aboard Deep Space 9. He, at one point, strolled along the upper level of the Promenade. (DS9: "Prophet Motive")
In the following year, the Karemma began conducting trade with the Federation, exporting goods such as Karemman fleece. The Ferengi acted as neutral intermediaries, although they unfairly gouged the Karemma with fabricated taxes and tariffs. A Karemma starship commanded by Hanok met with the Defiant to discuss their complaints about the trade duties. During the meeting, the ships were intercepted by two Jem'Hadar attack ships. All four ships entered the atmosphere of a gas giant, where the Defiant was able to destroy the Jem'Hadar ships and rescue the crew of the Karemma ship. The Karemma manufactured and provided at least one type of torpedo carried on board the Jem'Hadar attack vessels. (DS9: "Starship Down").
People.
Hanok.
Hanok was a male Karemma who served as trade minister in the 2370s.
In 2372, Hanok traveled to a remote Gamma Quadrant star system in a Karemma starship to meet with Benjamin Sisko and Quark aboard the USS Defiant.
He wished to discuss a trade dispute that had arisen between the Karemma and the Federation over taxes and fees imposed by the Ferengi Alliance, the intermediary between the two. Hanok told Sisko of the Ferengi charges including those for inspecting cargo for Founders and a tariff to help Tarkalean sheep herders – Ferengi-imposed taxes that had escaped the notice of the Federation Council.
The meeting between Hanok and the Defiant crew was detected by two Jem'Hadar warships who attacked Hanok's ship, which fled into the atmosphere of a nearby class-J gas giant. They did not respond to Hanok's transmission to not flee.
After the Defiant entered the planet's atmosphere to help the Karemma, Hanok was escorted to the mess hall, where Quark told him that the trade dispute was Rom's fault. Hanok was unconvinced and told Quark that "If we survive this, I'll see to it that you never do business in the Gamma Quadrant again."
Later, a Jem'Hadar torpedo impacted into the mess hall near Hanok and Quark, but did not detonate. The two later worked together and successfully defused it, aided in part by Hanok's knowledge of the design; Hanok himself had sold the weapons to the Dominion. When Quark accused him of lying when he claimed to "never sell sub-standard merchandise", Hanok's ironic response was that he should probably offer the Jem'Hadar a refund.
After the Defiant destroyed the Jem'Hadar ships and rescued the Karemma crew, Hanok was brought to Deep Space 9 to await transportation back to Karemma. As he had promised, Quark introduced Hanok to dabo. Hanok later won a substantial amount of money, much to Quark's surprise. (DS9: "Starship Down").
Ornithar.
Ornithar was the First Minister of the Karemma.
In 2371, he was approached by Federation and Ferengi representatives aboard the USS Defiant in an attempt to contact the Founders. Ornithar admitted that the only contact the Karemma had with the Founders was through their representatives, the Vorta. He did direct the Defiant crew to Callinon VII, where they had been instructed to send all inquiries. He would also arrange for transport for the Ferengi representative, Quark, back to Deep Space 9. (DS9: "The Search, Part I").
Background information.
Hanok was played by actor James Cromwell in his third of four Star Trek appearances.
The script for "Starship Down" states the pronunciation of Hanok's name is "HUN-ock". It also describes him and his people as, "tall, thin and elegant in bearing. Although the Karemma are mercantilist by nature, they're classy about it: think fine gem appraiser, not used car salesman.
Cromwell had difficulties filming in the heavy prosthetics required for the role of Hanok. As he explained, "The makeup was pretty dominating. I don't know how an alien feels about any particular thing, so I just played him as a Human character and tried to handle the makeup." (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion).
Technology.
Karemma starship.
The Karemma starship was a type of vessel utilized by the Karemma.
In 2372, Hanok used a vessel of this type to meet with Benjamin Sisko and Quark aboard the USS Defiant. Two Jem'Hadar attack ships happened upon the meeting and began attacking Hanok's ship. Outgunned by the Jem'Hadar, the ship fled into the atmosphere of a nearby Class J planet.
The Defiant pursued, but was damaged by the Jem'Hadar weapons. After the Defiant's main power was restored, and the two enemy ships destroyed, the Defiant rescued the Karemma crewmembers and brought them back to Deep Space 9. Their starship had to be abandoned. (DS9: "Starship Down").

Karemma Commerce Ministry.
The Karemma Commerce Ministry was an organization responsible for negotiating trade agreements on behalf of the Karemma, a member of the Dominion.
In 2372, the Commerce Ministry asked Starfleet to send the USS Defiant to the Gamma Quadrant to discuss problems with the trading relationship between the Karemma and the Federation. (DS9: "Starship Down").
