The Skrreea, or Skrreeans, were a humanoid species from the Gamma Quadrant.
Skrreea Male and Female.
Culture.
The Skrreea lived in a matriarchal society, as Skrreean males were considered far too emotional to be leaders and were constantly fighting among themselves. It was not unusual for Skrreean females to have multiple spouses.
The Skrreean also had an unusual skin condition which caused them to leave flakes of skin behind. This caused those who were unused to it to treat Skrreea with disdain and believe that they were "dirty".
The Skrreean spoken language had a unique syntax and grammatical structure which caused the universal translator to struggle with it initially before it could establish a translation matrix. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
Skrreean language.
Skrreean language was the language spoken by the Skrreea. The language had a very unique syntax and grammatical structure, and was unlike any other language in Starfleet's database prior to First Contact with the species in 2370.
Deep Space 9's universal translator initially had difficulty analyzing its language patterns, and the first Skrreean visitors to the station were made to keep talking so that the computer could establish a translation matrix. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
History.
The Skrreea were conquered by the T-Rogorans in the 16th century. The T-Rogorans slaughtered the Skrreea's leaders and forced the rest of the population into slavery.
By 2370, the T-Rogorans were themselves conquered by the Dominion. The Skrreea took this opportunity to flee their homeworld in whatever ships they had, in search for the Eye of the Universe of Skrreean legend. One ship, carrying Haneek and her family, discovered the Bajoran wormhole and identified it as the Eye. Arriving at Deep Space 9, Haneek studied Bajoran history, and assumed that Bajor was Kentanna, a planet named in Skrreean legend as a "planet of sorrow" where the Skrreean people were destined to settle. Some three million Skrreean refugees subsequently arrived at Deep Space 9 in search of aid.
With no established government, the Skrreea chose Haneek as their leader. Haneek petitioned the Bajoran Provisional Government to allow her people to settle on Bajor. The Bajorans refused, insisting that they were struggling to provide for their own people's needs and could not take in three million refugees.
Haneek's teenage son, Tumak, was angered by this decision and attempted to land one of the Skrreean ships on Bajor. Unfortunately, Tumak was unaware that the Skrreean ship had suffered a high-energy radiation leak. During a short battle with the Bajoran Militia, phaser fire ignited the radiation leak and destroyed the Skrreean ship, killing Tumak.
Haneek reluctantly accepted an offer from the Federation to colonize Draylon II, saying that "Bajor is not Kentanna". (DS9: "Sanctuary").
Kentanna.
Kentanna was the mythical land that awaited the Skrreean people on the other side of "the Eye of the Universe".
In 2370, they believed it would provide them with salvation when they fled the T-Rogorans, who had occupied the Skrreean homeworld centuries ago but had been recently been conquered by the Dominion.
When Haneek and her husbands found their way to the Alpha Quadrant through the Bajoran wormhole, she became the de facto leader of the Skrreea. She came to believe Bajor was Kentanna, but the Bajoran Provisional Government was forced to turn them away due to famines and other problems that had arisen on the planet after the Cardassian Occupation. Upon leaving Deep Space 9 for Draylon II, Haneek said to Major Kira, "You were right. Bajor is not Kentanna." (DS9: "Sanctuary").
People.
Cowl.
Cowl was a Skrreean male and one of Haneek's husbands. He was one of three million Skrreean refugees who arrived at Deep Space 9 in 2370.
The Skrreean society was matriarchal and males were treated as second class citizens. As such, Cowl had no position of authority in the Skreean society. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
Gai.
Gai was a Skrreean male. He was one of three million Skrreean refugees who arrived at Deep Space 9 in 2370.
He, along with some other male Skrreea, got into a fight with the people on the habitat ring on Deep Space 9. Reacting to what she felt was bigotry, Haneek, the Skrreean leader, reprimanded him. Skrreea had a matriarchal society, and as such, Gai was looked upon as a second class citizen. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
Haneek.
Haneek was a Skrreea woman chosen to represent a massive number of refugees that traversed the Bajoran wormhole in 2370. With their homeworld conquered by the T-Rogoran (who were subsequently conquered by the Dominion, allowing the Skrreea to escape), Haneek and her people hoped to find a new home, a promised land where they could resettle. Upon arriving at Deep Space 9, she believed that Bajor was Kentanna, the Skrreean's promised land.
Haneek was at first unable to communicate with the crew since the universal translator had trouble with her language. She trusted Kira Nerys, who led the group to the Infirmary, and showed them to their quarters. Once the universal translator was able to translate her language, she explained that she was a representative of the Skrreea. Haneek explained the fate of their planet and the purpose of their journey to Deep Space 9 commander Benjamin Sisko and his crew. She said there were three million Skrreea on the other side of the wormhole seeking asylum. She further revealed that Skrreean society is matriarchal and that men have no standing of authority in their society.
Haneek would discuss her request to live on Bajor with Minister Rozahn. Believing Bajor to be their promised land, Haneek offered the Skrreea to work as farmers on the planet. She said that her people wished to settle in a deserted area and transform it into farmland, and would not be a burden on the Bajoran people. They could restore Bajor's fertility quickly in exchange for residence. This would help Bajor which was in the midst of a famine. Sisko allowed the refugees to remain on the station until the Bajoran government decided their fate.
The government would ultimately refuse to allow the Skrreea to settle on Bajor, not convinced that a large number of new settlers would not have an adverse effect on the economy of Bajor. Haneek and the Skrreea would settle on Draylon II. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
Tumak.
Tumak was a young Skrreean male and the son of Haneek. They were among a large group of Skrreean refugees who arrived at Deep Space 9 in 2370.
Tumak was a belligerent and ill-tempered young man. He attacked Nog after the young Ferengi sprayed a foul-smelling liquid on him as a joke. After the Bajoran Provisional Government denied the Skrreeans' request to establish a settlement on Bajor, Tumak commandeered a small Skrreean ship and attempted to land on Bajor. When he was intercepted by Bajoran patrol craft, Tumak fired on them and fled. The Bajoran craft returned fire before being ordered to stand down by General Hazar. Unfortunately, a shot from one of the Bajorans, while not hitting Tumak's ship directly, ignited a radiation leak and destroyed it, killing Tumak. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
Vayna.
Vayna was a Skrreean female.
She was one of the leaders of a group of Skrreeans that came through the wormhole to seek a new home. They were looking for Kentanna, the planet of paradise, which they believed was Bajor. (DS9: "Sanctuary").
